Adnan Ahmed’s (Breakthrough Leader) Documentary ‘Big Zuu Goes to Mecca’ Premieres on BBC2 and iPlayer in March 2024!

Adnan is proud to announce that his authored single documentary film “Big Zuu goes to Mecca” will be transmitting on BBC2 9pm and iPlayer from March 2024. He filmed, produced and directed the film. The film follows award-winning rapper and chef Big Zuu making a pilgrimage to Mecca to try and understand more about his faith and what it means to be “a good Muslim”. This is a film about duality and balancing a Western lifestyle with religious faith.


Karen Gabay’s New Role: British Pop Archive Editorial Board Member

Karen Gabay, a Series Producer and Breakthrough Leader 2023, is excited to share her recent appointment as an editorial board member for the upcoming series of books published by the British Pop Archive in collaboration with Manchester University Press. The book series is set to launch in September 2024 and draws inspiration from The British Pop Archive (BPA), currently housed at Manchester’s John Rylands Research Institute and Library, one of the most prestigious libraries globally. The board members include leading music journalists & researchers. The series editors are Doug Field, Tom Attah and Kirsty Fairclough, and board members include: Elizabeth Alker DJ Paulette Mark Duffett Karen Gabay Chris Hawkins Emily Mackay Chris Pressler Shara Rambarran Hillegonda Reitveld  John Robb Jon Savage Veronica Skrimsjö Adelle Stripe Sini Timonen


Petal’s Writing Milestone with the Mary Prince Memorial Award

Petal Felix a Producer and Breakthrough Leader 2022 submitted her novel to the Mary Prince Memorial award and was thrilled to learn that it made the longlist. As part of the longlisted authors, she was offered a choice between a three-month writing course or six mentoring sessions with the National Writing Academy. This recognition was a significant achievement for her, especially since she had been juggling her creative writing alongside her demanding TV work.


Michael Jenkins FF

Michael  is co-founder of Blak Wave Productions; a self-shooting producer and director; and a writer for television and film. He recently directed The Shadow of Slavery as part of the Channel 4 series ‘Take Your Knee Off My Neck’. He said: “I am honoured to be a part of the team at BSA and excited to get involved, lend my voice and work with the amazingly talented students and staff.”


Archie Onobu FF

Congratulations to Archie Onobu, 2023 Breakthrough Leader, for his ITV's documentary series, Fresh Cuts, dedicated to showcasing the talents of emerging Black filmmakers. The episode stars Dr. Zoe Williams and her work with the NHS. It's will air on ITV1 Sunday 1st October at 22:40.

Congratulations Venita Singh-Warner for her work as Line Producer on the new series 'AP Dhillon First of a Kind', which premieres on Prime Amazon.


Janine Thomas FF

Congratulations to Janine Thomas, Channel 4 commissioning editor, who will be transferring from her position in the documentaries unit to lead the broadcaster's Untold youth strand.

A big congratulations to Petal Felix for obtaining the chance to work with Good Morning Britain. All of this was made possible by networking at our TVC Networking Summer Social in early August.

Fellow Breakthrough leader 2023 Leon Mayne wants to give flowers to Nicola Gregory who was producer of BBC & A24 comedy series ‘Dreaming Whilst Black’ which has recently been announced as being picked up for American network Showtime.
